Read Chinese in Telus Mobility BlackBerry 8330
July 26, 2008
Just got my cell phone upgraded from LG8100 to BlackBerry 8330. In the beginning I could not display Chinese characters in email and web browser. After following instructions given on this link to install Chinese fonts via Application Loader in BlackBerry’s Desktop Manager, now my BlackBerry can display all Chinese characters. Note that the installation instructions were given for BlackBerry 8100 (Pearl) but it also works for BlackBerry 8330 (Curve) for this one file only net_rim_font_chinese.alx – all other three files cannot be loaded with the loader.
One thing I cannot do is how to input Chinese in BlackBerry 8330 (Curve). If anyone knows how, please let me know by adding a comment below.
Update (December 14, 2009): I found this blog entry which teaches how to input Chinese on BlackBerry: http://yolearnchinese.com/archives/blackberry-chinese-input-method-support. I have not tested it yet myself but many people commenting on the original post tested it and seemed to work pretty well.

Great to hear it works for you as well!
Now my friend, Dickson, who works in Telus told me a button on the very top of BlackBerry 8330. I call it a secret key as I have not touched that key since I got my BlackBerry because I am not the person who read the manual
What is this key?
It is called the Standby key which puts the BlackBerry in standby mode. In this mode, you touch any key there is no response at all – the phone appears to be dead (turned off). But when someone phones in, the standby mode is automatically turned off and you hear the ringing tone. If you want to call out, you just press the standby key again to put the phone in active mode.
This was how I found out about this key…
I asked Dickson to upgrade my BlackBerry to the newest 8220 model that can flip open to show the keypad and the screen or fold it to hide the keys so that you cannot press any by mistake. The reason being on BlackBerry 8330 (my current version) all the keys are exposed. When I hang the phone on my waist using the handy ClipHanger, some keys are often touched by mistake. I tried the Keyboard Lock function and the password protection but none of them is convenient. Worst still, In either the Keyboard Lock or password-protected mode, the screen lights up when any of the keys is pressed by mistake. This wastes the battery and I do not like this.
So when Dickson asked why I wanted to switch to the newest 8220, I told him this reason and he immediately said you just use the Standby key to solve the problem. And he shows me where the key is. Indeed it does the job perfectly. It is indeed the smart phone!
To make me feel better, he told me that most people do not know about this key and don’t how handy it is and how much battery life it can save. So I share this sort of “secret key” with you. Enjoy using BlackBerry 8330 or any other models that have this Standby key

From the link I gave above in the original post, you will find the download link which is http://idisk.mac.com/achan1218-Public?view=web – click the icon before the first link called “BlackBerry 8100 (Pearl)” and you will see four files and the first file is what you are looking for.
